Medical acupuncture in Thornton-Cleveleys

Nurse-led medical acupuncture near Blackpool and Cleveleys, with assessment, consent and clinical reasoning at the centre of every session.

What it is

Medical acupuncture uses very fine, single-use sterile needles placed at carefully selected points. In a modern clinical setting, the aim is to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue in a way that may influence pain processing, muscle tension, circulation and nervous system activity.

It is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Maxine starts with your health history, symptoms, medication, goals and comfort levels before deciding whether acupuncture is appropriate.

People often seek support for

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Muscular tension and trigger points
  • Headaches and migraine-type symptoms
  • Recovery from strain or overload
  • Stress-related physical tension

What the evidence says

Acupuncture is most commonly discussed in relation to pain. UK guidance and public health information describe acupuncture as a treatment people may use for some pain conditions, and NICE guidance includes acupuncture as an option in specific circumstances for chronic primary pain.

Evidence does not mean results can be promised. It means treatment decisions are made carefully, with realistic expectations, ongoing review and referral onward where needed.

Medical acupuncture or electroacupuncture?

Medical acupuncture describes the clinical approach to assessment and needle treatment. Electroacupuncture adds electrical stimulation through needles. The choice should follow an assessment, rather than a promise that one technique is best for everyone.

Compare electroacupuncture, musculoskeletal appointments and treatment prices, or ask Maxine which consultation to arrange.

Safety and suitability

Tell your practitioner about medicines, pregnancy, bleeding problems, skin infections and any implanted electrical device before treatment. These details can affect suitability and the technique used. Do not stop prescribed medicines to prepare for acupuncture.

Temporary soreness, bruising, slight bleeding or feeling faint can occur. Discuss risks and alternatives before giving consent, and tell Maxine if you feel uncomfortable during treatment.

Read the NHS trust’s acupuncture safety information.

Guidance depends on the condition

NICE NG193 allows consideration of a course for chronic primary pain under specific training, time and cost conditions. It is not a recommendation for every painful condition. NICE NG59 advises against acupuncture for low back pain with or without sciatica.
