“How many sessions will I need?” is a reasonable question when you are thinking about acupuncture. You want to understand the time, cost and commitment before deciding.

I would not give you a fixed answer without understanding your situation. My approach at MAW Clinic begins with a consultation, considers whether treatment is suitable and includes review. A treatment plan should give us something clear to discuss, rather than leave you wondering why you are returning or what counts as progress.

Understanding the problem you are bringing

I start with your symptoms and health history, but I also want to know what matters to you. Is discomfort interrupting your sleep? Are you avoiding an activity? What have you already tried, and what would make an appointment worthwhile from your point of view?

These questions help me understand your aims. They do not imply that acupuncture will achieve them. They give us a clearer basis for discussing the options and, if treatment is agreed, reviewing whether it has been useful.

Bring a list of your medicines and details of relevant diagnoses, investigations, surgery or other care. Tell me about any recent change in your health. You do not need to stop prescribed medicine to prepare for a consultation.

Checking suitability before choosing a technique

Acupuncture is not suitable for everyone. Conditions and circumstances such as pregnancy, bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medication, infection and implanted electrical devices can affect the decision or the technique used. They need discussion before treatment. North Tees and Hartlepool NHS patient information on suitability

The relevant guidance matters too. NICE’s recommendation to consider acupuncture or dry needling for chronic primary pain has specific conditions; it is not a recommendation for every painful problem. Low back pain with or without sciatica has separate guidance advising against acupuncture. NICE NG193 · NICE NG59

If a treatment is proposed, I want you to understand why, what risks and alternatives to consider and what questions remain. You can decide not to proceed.

Agreeing what we will review

If we agree on a plan, we need a practical way to discuss your response. Depending on what you bring to the consultation, that might mean noting how often a symptom occurs, how long an activity feels manageable or whether sleep is being interrupted.

For example, “my shoulder still aches” is useful information. Adding “I can now sit at my desk for longer, but I am still waking at night” gives us more to discuss. This is an example of how to describe a response, not a claim about a client’s result.

You do not need a complicated diary. A brief note of what changed, how long any change lasted and whether you experienced unwanted effects can make a follow-up conversation more useful.

Deciding whether to continue

The number of acupuncture treatments varies with the person’s response. NHS patient information describes reviewing whether it is beneficial after a few sessions and deciding whether to continue. Kent Community Health NHS guidance on reviewing treatment

At a review, I want to discuss whether there has been a worthwhile benefit, whether it has lasted and whether treatment still makes sense for you. If there is no meaningful improvement, repeating the same plan without discussion is not a satisfactory answer. We may need to reconsider the approach or discuss further medical advice.

Please report unwanted effects. Worsening symptoms should be assessed rather than automatically treated as evidence that acupuncture is helping.

Knowing the cost before committing

At MAW Clinic, an initial medical acupuncture consultation and first treatment where suitable costs £50 for 60 minutes. Medical acupuncture follow-ups are £40 for 45 minutes. A first appointment does not commit you to a package or guarantee that treatment will be appropriate. MAW Clinic appointment prices
